Man kills brother over money dispute, then dies by suicide

A local man in his 60s killed his brother after a prolonged money dispute, then kept the body with him for several days before taking his own life.

The Judiciary Police (PJ) provided additional details yesterday evening regarding a suspected fall from a residential apartment that occurred at noon. The case involves two deceased individuals, both Macau residents with the surname Chan.

One of the deceased was an elderly man who jumped from a building in the Fai Chi Kei area, while the other, his middle-aged brother aged between 31 and 60, was found lying in his brother’s residential apartment, where he had been deceased for over 48 hours.

The police reported that when PJ officers and forensic experts arrived at the scene, they discovered that the body had begun to decompose, indicating that the time of death was over 48 hours prior.

The victim had multiple open fractures on the left rear of the skull, suggesting that the skull had been struck several times with a solid object.

The victim’s face and nasal bones also exhibited fractures, but there were no visible signs of struggle on the limbs or body.

It was estimated that the victim died from blunt force trauma, consistent with the characteristics of a homicide case.

According to the PJ, the younger brother was found lying face down in the living room, with a significant amount of congealed blood on the floor and bloodstains surrounding the body.

Due to the decomposition of the body, the exact cause of death still requires determination by a forensic pathologist, the police stated.

They also noted that an 85-centimeter-long, 3-centimeter-diameter metal pipe was found at the scene, with one end stained with blood. Examination revealed that the living room of the unit matched the characteristics of the initial crime scene.

The police cited their preliminary investigation, indicating that the case involved a financial dispute, though further investigation is needed to clarify the specific details. They noted that the preliminary findings had not revealed any criminal records or signs of a struggle.

So far, the investigation has confirmed that the younger brother visited his older brother’s apartment alone at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 15, while the older brother returned home at 6 p.m. that same day.

The case was reported by the older brother’s son after he accompanied his father home from a health center.

The police referenced his account, stating, “While waiting outside the apartment, he saw a man lying on the living room floor through a crack in the door. Concerned, he called the police for help.”

According to the PJ, when the Public Security Police (PSP) officers and firefighters arrived and broke down the door, the man who had “fallen from the building” was already on the balcony. Witnesses reported that he was seen falling at that moment. The police believed that the deceased may have committed suicide out of fear of being implicated in the case.

The body was found on the ground below the balcony, on the pedestrian walkway, exhibiting multiple fractures and no obvious signs of struggle.

The injuries are consistent with a single fall from a significant height, the police noted.
