The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has developed a plan to explore the potential for a branch venue of the International Cities of Gastronomy Fest Macao, scheduled for March next year, in the ZAPE area.
Recently, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of MGTO, reported that since the launch of the “ZAPE Taste Jam” market on August 15, the first four days attracted more than 36,000 visitors, averaging over 9,000 per day, despite a one-day suspension on August 17 due to the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 3.
Total revenue reached MOP200,000. This news sparked heated online discussions, with some netizens noting that “each person spent less than MOP5,” highlighting a mismatch between expenditure and revenue.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the tourism chief stated that the 10-day event had initially estimated an average of 4,000 visitors per day but actually recorded 36,000 visitors in the first four days. She emphasized that these results were “better than expected.”
She added that during the event, in addition to the market discounts, nearby hotels offered special deals, and the response from the hotels was “positive.”
In the interview, Senna Fernandes revealed that authorities are exploring the possibility of setting up branch venues in the Rua de Xangai and Rua de Cantão areas for next year’s International Cities of Gastronomy Fest Macao. The aim is to create a ripple effect and transform the ZAPE area, from Macau Fisherman’s Wharf to Rua de Cantão, into a vibrant new district.
The recently concluded market was co-organized by the Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau. Its vice president, Wu Wai Fong, informed reporters that the association will refine future event arrangements based on customer feedback, including adding more signboards. She emphasized the aim to continue organizing diverse activities to introduce unique elements, create varied consumer experiences, and promote the sustainable development of neighborhood tourism in Macau.
