The Center of Excellence for Medical Professional Development (CEPMD) at the Macau University of Science and Technology’s (MUST) Faculty of Health Sciences was this week recognized as a comprehensive skills development training center by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSED).
This is the first time the RCSED has recognized a tertiary qualification center in the Greater China region, said CEPMD program director Billy Chan of CEPMD. Two other institutes from Malaysia and Sudan were also recognized by RCSED.
Chan expects MUST to provide more highly-qualified surgical training courses in Macau through close collaborations with the RCSED, as well as providing innovative medical education in the city.
RCSED President Michael Lavelle-Jones said, “The thing that we [MUST and RCSE] do have in common is our belief in the pursuit of excellence.”
“I look forward to the strengthening of our partnership which will enable [us] to deliver not only training for surgeons in Macau, but also for surgeons in China and in the wider world beyond.”
Lavelle-Jones concluded by saying that RCSED will continue to support MUST in any way it can.
CEPMD was established in 2011. It provides a range of courses for medical professionals ranging from endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeons to pediatric nurses.
Regarding cooperation between the parties, the president stated, “Our wish is never to impose any particular program or course, but instead to see what’s required locally.”
According to Edward Cheuck Seen Lai, vice president of MUST University Hospital, CEPMD is waiting for the government’s approval in order to start offering master’s degrees. As to whether it will train local medical specialists or not, Lai said MUST serves all medical professionals in the city and that it provides a range of specific training to medical specialists.
The RCSED is the world’s oldest surgical corporation and traces its origins back to 1505. Its international network comprises more than 23,000 professionals in 100 countries around the world, 65 percent of which live and work in the UK. Julie Zhu
