The theatre in Macau’s Creole language “Patuá” is back and will present two performances this weekend as part of the Macau Arts Festival program.
Titled “A Star is Arriving,” the performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (May 11 and 12).
According to the Times’ review of ticket sales with the Macau Ticketing network yesterday, there were less than a dozen tickets available for the Saturday evening show, with a considerable number of tickets also sold for Sunday, indicating a near sell-out for this rare opportunity to experience a theatrical performance in Patuá .
As usual, the Doci Papiaçám Di Macau group will present a play commenting on the significant issues of Macau in a humorous and somewhat provocative way.
The play revolves around Délia, a substitute drama teacher, and Giselda, a former gambling promoter on the verge of poverty, whose lives intersect when Délia accepts the seemingly childish challenge of getting a shy, stuttering girl on stage.
The challenge then becomes a public bet that Giselda desperately wants to promote. While Giselda sees the opportunity as a new lease on life, for Délia, it represents an unprecedented act of courage.
The performances will be held at the Grand Auditorium of the Macao Cultural Centre and about 2 hours and 30 minutes long, including one interval.
The play is performed mostly in Patuá, with subtitles in Chinese, Portuguese and English to cater to all audiences.
