German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld announced this week that his hotel in Macau will be the first of a six-star chain branded under his name.
The fashion icon has partnered with local gaming and tourism operator Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM) to launch the hotel that bears his name, which is to be included in the Lisboa Palace complex project, currently in construction in Cotai.
Lagerfeld’s group president and CEO, Pier Paolo Righi, was cited by AFP as saying that the group is in the process of exploring other opportunities to open new properties around the world.
At the age of 83 Lagerfeld, the artistic director of high fashion house Chanel, has participated in some interior design projects for the hotel industry in the past, namely for Hotel de Crillon in Paris and the Metropole in Monaco.
Lagerfeld is now ready to move into a new business, involving the designing of entire hotels following such examples as Armani, Bulgari or Versace that have opened properties under their highly renowned names. Versace is also opening a property in the Lisboa Palace complex, which is expected to open its doors in 2018 with a total of 2,000 hotel rooms among other luxury facilities that include shops, restaurants and a casino.
