UM breaks into global top 150 universities in World University Rankings

The University of Macau (UM) has entered the global top 150 universities for the first time, ranking 145th in the latest assessment.

Times Higher Education (THE) has released its 2026 World University Rankings, featuring 2,191 higher education institutions from 115 countries and regions worldwide. Among those recognized, three universities from Macau made the list: the University of Macau (UM), the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), and the City University of Macau (CityU).

According to the rankings, the University of Macau is the highest-ranked institution in Macau, placing 145th – a rise of 35 positions from last year’s 180th place.

Meanwhile, MUST is ranked in the 251–300 range.

Notably, CityU has made its debut in the global university rankings, placing within the 601–800 range. In contrast, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) was listed among the participating institutions that did not make the final rankings.

According to reports, the latest THE World University Rankings have introduced several key performance indicators designed to enhance the evaluation of institutions. These indicators include Teaching Environment, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry Impact.

According to published data, the UM is making notable progress in global higher education rankings. Currently, it holds the 145th position in THE World University Rankings and ranks 36th among universities in Asia.

In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, the university is placed 285th, while it stands 26th among the world’s young universities.

Additionally, the University of Macau is listed 230th in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings.

In the latest THE World University Rankings for 2026, the University of Oxford in the UK has maintained its top position for the 10th consecutive year.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US follows in second place, while Princeton University and the University of Cambridge are tied for third.

Among mainland Chinese institutions, Tsinghua University and Peking University ranked 12th and 13th, respectively. In Hong Kong, eight universities are featured in the rankings, with the University of Hong Kong climbing to 33rd place and the Chinese University of Hong Kong advancing to 41st.
