A large pool of candidates, including over 120 political newcomers, are vying for 344 seats on the Chief Executive Election Committee. A total of 348 candidates, a majority of which are under the age of 65, will contest the positions, announced the president of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Song Man Lei.
“There are quite a lot of new faces, with over 120 people participating in the election for the first time. The remaining 200 or so have participated before,” Song said. Candidates are seeking to influence the selection of Macau’s top leader by securing a spot on the critical 400-member committee.
If no appeals were filed by yesterday, the final list of accepted candidates will be published ahead of the vote on Aug. 11. The 12 members representing Macau in the legislature and 38 delegates to the national advisory body have automatic berths. Six religious representatives will also serve.
