Briefs | Chan Wa Keong  calls audience ‘Sulu Sou’s people’   

Chan Wa Keong, a lawmaker appointed by the Chief Executive, was at the center of a controversy which occurred during TDM’s Sunday talk show at Macau Forum. Members of the audience urged the lawmakers to veto the government’s budget which is for more than MOP100 billion. Chan responded “if [we] veto it, then [we] all might not have a MOP9,000 cash handout next year.” Several members of the audience criticized Chan for not having supervised the government, claiming he is using his position as a lawmaker to protect the government. Chan told them in reply, “it is okay that you are making noise, I know you are Sulu Sou’s people.”

Childcare capacity to increase next year

In 2018, the capacity of children’s nurseries will be increased to accommodate half of the total number of children aged below three years old in Macau, according to the President of the Social Affairs Bureau, Vong Yim Mui. Currently, there are 54 nurseries in Macau which provide child care to a total of approximately 10,000 children. However, capacity can only basically meet the demands of around 7,000 children aged below two years old, as noted by Vong.  Next year, four new nurseries will start operations and they are expected to offer services to 1,000 more children.
