The Urban Renewal Committee, chaired by Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raymond Tam, opened its first 2026 meeting yesterday, outlining plans to accelerate redevelopment, expand public facilities in older districts, and improve residents’ quality of life.
Central to this year’s agenda is the redevelopment of the seven buildings in Iao Hon, while efforts will also extend to single-building redevelopment projects and the enhancement of public facilities in older districts.
According to a statement released by the committee, it plans to explore expanding the scope of completed replacement housing and temporary housing projects to make more efficient use of existing resources.
“This year, the committee will step up efforts on single-building redevelopment and the enhancement of public facilities in older districts,” the statement read.
At the same time, it will consider additional strategies to promote urban renewal in a sustainable and community-focused manner.
During the meeting, three specialized working groups reported on their latest progress. Discussions focused on the long-term mechanisms for replacement and temporary housing, as well as practical approaches to advancing urban renewal through administrative optimization.
“The committee also considered practical measures to advance urban renewal through administrative optimization and explored ways to boost community vitality and improve residents’ quality of life through street-level beautification initiatives,” the statement concluded.
