Egypt | President offers sympathy after heavy rains

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has expressed sympathy with people affected by the rare heavy rains over the past two days. The downpour had caused flash floods on the streets, leaving parts of the capital, Cairo, and other parts of Egypt impassable. Footage on social media showed floods, leaky ceilings and parked cars completely submerged in water. Yesterday, el-Sissi sought to reassure people that measures would be taken to prevent this from recurring.

Armenia | Officials in talks with Russia amid opposition push

The Armenian government sent emissaries to Russia for talks on the political crisis that’s convulsing their country as the leader of anti-government protests pressed demands to take power. Nikol Pashinyan, who’s led the demonstrations that forced the abrupt resignation this week of longtime ruler Serzh Sargsyan, was rallying support among fellow legislators ahead of a parliamentary vote on a new prime minister set for May 1. The ruling party controls a majority of seats in the legislature.
