Entertainment | Korean musical ‘Bibap’ returns to Macau

Korean food and comedy musical Bibap returned to Macau at The Parisian Macao Theatre last week  for their second performance in the region.

Blending martial arts, singing, street dance and hip-hop, the performance includes elements of Korean pop music, culture and food. It was created to celebrate bibimbap – a kind of spicy rice dubbed Korea’s unofficial national dish – and to promote Korean cuisine.

The interactive show tells the story of a cooking competition between two master chefs, “Green Chef” and “Red Chef,” at the fictitious Bibap Restaurant. It features six other performers also dressed as chefs, and incorporates ‘a cappella’ singing, beat-boxing, breakdancing and acrobatics.

Speaking on the sidelines of a media preview, show director Choi Chul Ki said that he looked forward to bringing Macau a taste of Korean culture once again.

“This is a show made by both the audience and the actors, and we are sure that there will be a great response at The Parisian Theatre,” he said.

The two performers who specialize in beat boxing mimic the different sounds of the kitchen, while the other entertainers mime cutting ingredients, frying vegetables and meat, and washing dishes.

Bibap has performed in 25 countries and regions since its debut in 2009, and was also invited to perform at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Korean musical will run until April 23 at The Parisian Theatre.
