Hong Kong’s Cheung Yan Kit dominates MiniGP

Hong Kong’s young rider Cheung Yan Kit dominated the weekend at the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) MiniGP Southeast Asia (SEA) Rounds 3 and 4, which took place at Coloane Karting Track.

The 11-year-old Cheung, son of former Grand Prix racer Cheung Wai On, has shown not only inherited talent but also how the training sessions he recently held in Spain with the CFMOTO Talent Project are paying off in his preparation as a rider.

This was the second weekend of the inaugural season of FIM MiniGP SEA, which is taking place in Macau.

Cheung won three of the four races, taking second place in the remaining one, showcasing the significant progress he has achieved over a month, also benefiting from the absence of some strong competitors over the weekend.

His only challenger was Taiwanese rider Chien Pin-Chi, who won Race 1 on Sunday, stopping Cheung from having a weekend of straight victories.

The Hong Kong racer won Races 1 and 2 on Saturday and Race 2 on Sunday, with Chien taking second and Qi Yu Han (China) taking third.

In Sunday’s Round 4, Chien surprised Cheung by winning Race 1, with Qi repeating in third position.

Unfortunately, the weekend was also marked by a significant reduction in participation. Just seven riders were listed to race last weekend, compared to 15 one month ago.

This was due to the absence of almost all Chinese Mainland competitors, who were represented only by Qi this weekend.

On the other hand, a new face surfaced, increasing the number of countries and regions participating, such as Korean Kim Seong Hyeon, who switched from the MiniGP Northeast Asia series to the SEA one.

The absence of most mainland racers was likely due to a calendar clash between the SEA series and the China national series.

The MiniGP SEA championship will conclude with Rounds 5 and 6, scheduled for August 30 and 31, where the first-ever MiniGP SEA champion will be crowned.

As The Times previously reported, the top two riders in each series will be invited to participate in the MiniGP World Finals in Valencia, Spain, ahead of the MotoGP championship finale.
