Housing leads to ‘McSleepers’ phenomenon in HK
Alcoholism, drug abuse and gambling are common issues observed among homeless people. However, a South China Morning Post report on ‘McSleepers’ noted that in Hong Kong, the problem appears to stem from issues of housing and property prices. Many prefer a clean, air-conditioned 24-hour fast food chain to an insect-ridden low-cost apartment.
McDonald’s has confirmed that many individuals stay in their restaurants for long periods of time, and stated that they try to accommodate them provided that they do not disturb other customers.
According to Business Insider, McDonald’s Hong Kong has emphasized that they “welcome all walks of life to visit [their] restaurants anytime.”
