Influenza leads notifiable disease cases in January

Macau recorded 1,608 cases of notifiable infectious diseases in January, with influenza accounting for the largest share, followed by rotavirus and norovirus, according to the Health Bureau (SSM).

The bureau requires medical institutions and laboratory personnel to report 45 specified infectious diseases under the city’s Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Law. Authorities said the monitoring system helps track disease trends and supports the development of prevention strategies.

Influenza accounted for 1,307 cases last month, although this represented a significant decline from the previous month. Rotavirus infections rose sharply to 84 cases, with about 80% linked to a school-related gastroenteritis cluster.

Norovirus infections reached 74 cases, up from 21 cases in the previous month despite a year-on-year decline. Health officials said norovirus is highly contagious and can spread through contaminated food, water, or surfaces, or through close contact, particularly in institutions such as schools and elderly care facilities.
