Man arrested for theft of luxury watches worth RMB3.78 million

The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a Hong Kong man earlier this week for stealing two luxury watches valued at RMB3.78 million from a mainland woman.

PJ spokesman Cheong Un Hong announced the arrest during a special press conference, identifying the suspect as a 58-year-old man surnamed Chung.

The PJ received a report on May 31 from the woman, who operates a luxury watch trading business.

She informed police that the watches were stolen from a safe in an empty shop in a city-center shopping mall earlier that day.

Cheong noted that the suspect had asked the woman to bring the watches to Macau and meet a man interested in purchasing them, who was still at large at the time.

During the meeting, the man requested that she temporarily store the watches in a locked safe in the empty shop, showing her a bag of “cash” as assurance.

After stepping outside for a smoke, the victim was told to wait while the man went to the washroom, but he never returned.

Chung then entered through the back door of the mall, opened the safe, took the watches, and fled.

After meeting Chung, the man left Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge checkpoint.

The police intercepted Chung upon his re-entry and identified him as a co-conspirator.
He was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Wednesday, facing a theft charge.
