Nearly 56,000 residents insured under GBA subsidy program

Nearly 56,000 Macau residents have enrolled in a health insurance subsidy program across nine Greater Bay Area cities as of December 31, according to government data.

Since the program’s launch in July 2019, more than 19,000 residents have received financial support from the Macau SAR Government. The figures were disclosed in a written response from Health Bureau director Alvis Lo.

In a written inquiry at the Legislative Assembly, lawmaker Lei Leong Wong asked whether the subsidies would be extended to all inland provinces of China, noting that Macau residents are scattered across the country.

Lo said that starting Jan. 1, the geographical coverage of the health insurance subsidies will be expanded to cover the entire provinces of Guangdong and Fujian. He added that the program currently targets cities in mainland China where most Macau residents reside.

The expansion is part of broader efforts to support Macau residents studying, working, or living on the mainland.

Since 2025, “E-Government Services of the Macao SAR” self-service kiosks – offering 37 services from 11 public entities – have been installed in Guangdong cities including Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen.

“In the future, it will be implemented in an orderly manner and according to the actual situation in more provinces and cities in mainland China,” Lo said in the response.

This year, the government plans to install kiosks in Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, and in Sanxiang and Tanzhou in Zhongshan.
