Typhoon Signal No. 8 expected tonight as Tapah intensifies

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has warned that Tropical Cyclone Tapah is likely to strengthen, with Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 expected to be issued between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. tonight.
The weather bureau has maintained Tropical Storm Signal No. 3 since 8 a.m. today as Tropical Cyclone Tapah approaches the region.
Despite its relatively small circulation, Tapah is forecast to pass within 150 kilometers southwest of the city early Monday, with winds expected to intensify this evening as the storm moves northwest.
In its latest update, SMG has rated the probability of this upgrade as moderate to relatively high. Regarding flooding, SMG has warned that flooding might occur in low-lying areas, particularly in the Inner Harbor. Water levels there are expected to reach 0.5 meters or higher tomorrow, driven by the combined effects of the storm surge and astronomical tides.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Observatory anticipates that gale-force winds may impact the Pearl River Estuary and stated that it “will consider issuing the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 between 9 p.m. and midnight tonight” based on the storm’s progress.
The Hong Kong Observatory has predicted heavy squally showers and thunderstorms for today and tomorrow, accompanied by rough seas and swells that will make coastal waters dangerous.
Local authorities have also cautioned residents to secure windows and outdoor objects, complete other preventive measures, and avoid shoreline activities.
Earlier this morning, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced the suspension of classes for infants, kindergarteners, elementary school students, and children with physical and intellectual disabilities due to the storm.
Meanwhile, a number of ferry services have had their schedules adjusted or were suspended.
Several Hong Kong–Macau ferry sailings have been canceled, including the 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. departures from Hong Kong to Macau, as well as the 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. sailings from Macau to Hong Kong.
However, ferry services to and from Taipa remain unaffected and are operating as usual, according to TurboJET’s announcement.
The company also stated that if a No. 8 tropical cyclone signal is issued in either Hong Kong or Macau, all ferry operations will be suspended until further notice.
