UM monitoring alleged sexual harassment case following former student’s claim

A Facebook post from a former University of Macau (UM) student has been circulating online regarding a current PhD student’s alleged behavior, including harassment, manipulation, and sexual abuse, among a number of other actions. The university stated that they are monitoring the incident, and have learned that a report has been made to the police, following an inquiry from the Times. “To protect personal privacy, we are not at liberty to comment on the incident at the moment,” added UM.

The former student has written an open letter addressed to the university in hopes that they respond to the situation and create a better environment for UM students, ensuring student safety and gender equity. The letter is currently co-signed by over 30 people concerned by the situation, and over 280 responses have been received alongside the co-signer list.

The alleged victim is a recent UM graduate, and is currently studying at the University of Chicago. 

“These actions include rape, sexual abuse, use of violence, gaslighting, cyber-stalking, emotional manipulation, and preventing me from seeking help from multiple sources,” said the former UM student in her open letter to UM, written and shared on Google Docs.

The letter is currently 11 pages long, excluding the co-signer list, and includes details of her experience with the alleged perpetrator, with whom she claimed she had a relationship at the time of the incidents. Staff reporter
