2-Zhan-Zhenyu_Lu-ChengThe 10th Macau Design Biennial opened yesterday at the Special Exhibition Gallery of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau. The exhibition showcases award-winning designs by artists from the “cross-straits” region encompassing China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as artists from Japan and Malaysia.
Founded by the Macau Designers Association, the event has been held since 1994 and is now in its 10th edition. It serves as the only competition for professionals in the design sector in Macau.
Various awards were presented to artists at the opening event on Wednesday, and these works will be showcased in the Handover Gifts Museum until February 18, 2016. In addition, some of the award-winning works will be collated and displayed by the Macau Museum of Art on a permanent basis.
The final selection for the exhibition was decided on July 25 by an international judging panel consisting of experts from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Germany and Portugal.
The Macau Design Biennial is co-organized by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau of Macau, the Macao Museum of Art, the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macau Designers Association. It is supported by the Macau Foundation and the Macau Government Tourism Office.
This year’s edition has attracted 2,202 entries by 694 participants from the cross-straits region, Japan and Malaysia, according to exhibition organizers.
According to organizers, the biennial’s stated purpose is to enhance the public’s understanding of the complex relationship between creative design in corporate branding and industrial development. They hope that the exhibition can elevate the awareness and image of the design industry, and make it more appealing to the all members of the community.
The exhibition opens today and will last until February 18, 2016. It is open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. with no admittance on Monday. Admission to the Macau Design Biennial is free.
