4 local youngsters killed in a car crash; 3 others in emergency treatment

A sedan vehicle crashed yesterday morning into multiple iron railings, traffic signs, and a curb on Avenida da Amizade, the Public Security Police Force (PSP) reported.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle was transporting seven people, including six passengers and the driver. From these, three have succumbed to their injuries on-site, despite rescue efforts from the Fire Services Bureau. The other four occupants of the car were injured and transported to the hospital for assessment and treatment.

Authorities confirmed late in the evening that one of the four hospitalized individuals had also died.

The PSP confirmed to the Times via phone that the vehicle involved in the incident had six passengers, five males and one female, all aged between 19 and 21, and residents of Macau.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was carrying two passengers over the legal limit, suggesting a violation of regulations concerning the maximum number of occupants allowed.

A PSP spokesperson also noted that among the four people who were killed in the accident was a female driver in her 20s. It is suspected that she lost control of the vehicle while navigating a bend, leading to a crash into a curb and iron railings.

As of yesterday evening, the remaining three victims were still receiving emergency treatment, and their status has not been updated.

Police have confirmed that they have inspected the vehicle involved in the accident. Still, the cause of the incident remains under investigation, including factors such as the vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m., near the Macau Grand Prix Building. In a press release, the PSP stated that by the time officers arrived at the scene, both the driver and passengers were already unconscious. Initial evidence collection at the site has been completed.

It was also said that the vehicle left a parking spot on Rua de Bruxelas in NAPE, traveled along Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen, and entered Avenida da Amizade via an overpass. Upon reaching the accident site, it lost control and struck the left curb.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, the PSP noted. Although rumors immediately started circulating on social media platforms indicating that the occupants of the vehicle had been coming from a nightlife entertainment venue and had been drinking, the PSP has not confirmed to the Times if any tests for alcohol or drug substances have been made.

The police emphasized that no pedestrians were injured in the accident and that no other vehicles were involved. They urged members of the public who might have witnessed the incident or have any relevant information to contact the PSP Traffic Department at 2837 4214.
