Alexis Tam’s appointments in Europe extended

Former Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam has recently had his appointment as the director of three overseas Macau offices extended for two years, effective from December 20 this year, the Official Gazette notified.
The former secretary’s appointments as the director of the three Macau Economic and Trade Offices, in Lisbon, Portugal; in Brussels, Belgium to the headquarters of the European Union; and to the World Trade Organization, had lasted for one year prior to the extension.
As stated in the Official Gazette, the Chief Executive explained that Tam possesses the requisite experience and professional ability to carry out his duties. Tam speaks several languages, including both official languages of the Macau SAR, Chinese and Portuguese.
Born to a Chinese family in Myanmar, the former secretary came to Macau when he was aged four. He graduated from Pui Ching Middle School in Macau, before obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Taiwan. He also holds a Master’s degree from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, as well as a PhD from Nankai University in Tianjin.
Before becoming a senior official, Tam served in several areas of the government, including in higher education teaching and public administration. He was appointed Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture in 2014, at the start of the second term of former Chief Executive Chui Sai On.
He possesses two other degrees in Portuguese language and culture from ISCTE Lisbon University College in Portugal, in addition to finishing two advanced courses in Human Resource Management and Strategic Management at the Catholic University of Lisbon.
In March 2019, he was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of Lisbon in recognition of his commitment to promoting positive policies that encourage the teaching of Portuguese in public and private schools. AL
