DSPA to enhance Cotai Ecological Zones with water flow restoration

The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) has committed to optimizing the Cotai Ecological Zones, as announced during a closed-door meeting with the Taipa and Coloane Community Service Consultative Council on Tuesday at the Seac Pai Van Community Complex in Coloane.
Spanning about 55 hectares near the Macau-Hengqin Lotus Flower Bridge, the Cotai Ecological Zones consist of two main areas. Ecological Zone 1, roughly 15 hectares, lies northeast of the Lotus Bridge and features two bird-watching houses on its south bank. Zone 2 covers about 40 hectares on the west bank of the Cotai Reclamation Area and includes a coastal mudflat mangrove wetland starting from the Coloane wastewater plant.
Since the project’s completion in 2004, the reserve has recorded 327 algae species, 54 insect species, and 118 fish species, among others, according to DSPA.
This week, DSPA officials detailed plans to improve water circulation in Zone 1, where sediment buildup has blocked stream flow. Restoration work to create a more dynamic water system is underway and is expected to finish between late June and early July.
Additionally, bird observation shelters will be installed in Zone 2 to encourage wildlife appreciation. DSPA also plans to launch a smart education platform using QR codes throughout the reserve, allo wing visitors to access information on local species instantly.
