Gov’t disposes of unsold firecrackers and fireworks

The local government spent more time than usual to dispose of this year’s unsold firecrackers and fireworks in a safe manner, according to a statement released by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM).

As this year’s Chinese Lunar New Year fireworks sale period has now ended, the IAM decided to destroy a large quantity of unsold pieces of fireworks due to safety concerns. Since this year had more unsold fireworks than usual, the IAM destroyed the fireworks in two phases.

According to statistics, the total number of firecrackers, fireworks and fire poppers purchased this year amounted to about 3,620 boxes, 12.9% less than last year. Some 687 boxes (19%) were destroyed this year, significantly more than last year’s 336 boxes (8% of the total in 2019).

Fewer visitors headed to the designated fireworks areas this year. The total number of visitors to the firecrackers discharge area in Macau was 15,149, down 54.7% from last year. Taipa’s firecracker discharge area welcomed 10,334 visitors, a 55.1% decrease compared to 2019.
