Gov’t rejects US report on human rights

The Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has expressed strong opposition to the recently published 2025 annual report by the United States Congressional Executive Commission, which it says distorts facts and misrepresents Macau’s human rights situation.
In a statement, the MSAR said that over the past 25 years since Macau’s return to China, the region has fully and faithfully implemented the ‘One country, two systems’ principle and the Basic Law of Macau.
The statement added that during this period, Macau has experienced “rapid economic development, social stability, and enhanced public welfare, while maintaining a robust legal system and judicial independence.”
The government noted that residents of Macau “enjoy wide-ranging rights under the law, including freedom of expression, religion, press, and movement, and that human rights are fully guaranteed.”
The statement called on the U.S. commission to eliminate bias, respect objective facts, and refrain from defaming Macau’s human rights record. It also urged the commission to avoid using human rights as a pretext to interfere in China’s internal affairs, specifically those of the Macau SAR.
“The report ignores reality and maligns Macau’s achievements in governance, economic growth, and social harmony,” the statement said. The government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the Basic Law, protecting the rights of its residents, and maintaining social and legal stability.
The SAR urged foreign bodies to recognize Macau’s progress objectively and avoid politicizing human rights issues for external agendas. LV
