Gov’t unveils packed August lineup of cultural, sports events

The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and the Sports Bureau (ID) have unveiled a packed summer calendar for August, featuring everything from children’s theatre and heritage trails to badminton tournaments and art exhibitions, as part of a citywide push to promote cultural engagement and active lifestyles.
During a press conference held at the Macao Cultural Centre yesterday, IC president Leong Wai Man said, “The bureau continues to integrate resources and roll out a diverse lineup of activities for August.”
New heritage trail tour
A newly launched “Macao Historical Exploration Tour” will run every Saturday and Sunday from mid-August to the end of September. The initiative blends theatrical guided tours with stamp-collection missions across three historically significant sites: the signing site of the Treaty of Wangxia, the Xian Xinghai Memorial Museum, and General Ye Ting’s Former Residence.
Leong described the route as an innovative “history + performing arts + cultural creativity” model, using the IP of historical figures such as Xian Xinghai and General Ye Ting as entry points. “Through vivid stories, we aim to highlight Macau’s unique role in Chinese history and offer participants an immersive experience of the city’s cultural and historical depth,” she said.
Free shuttle buses will be available to take participants to the tour from R. de Dom Belchior Carneiro near Ruins of St. Paul’s and Rua do Cunha in Taipa. No advance registration is required.
MICAF extended
The third Macao International Children’s Arts Festival (MICAF) has proven so popular that organizers have added extra showtimes for several programs. August will see a steady lineup of children’s theatre and stage productions, alongside Little MICAF’s Paradise weekend parties and a pop-up bookstore operating every Saturday and Sunday.
The final two weekends of the month will feature water play, foam parties, and interactive activities for young audiences.
Meanwhile, “Art Everywhere – Cultural Vibes at the Weekend” continues every Friday through Sunday at Nam Van Lake, with food stalls, craft booths, live performances, workshops, and reading sessions.
Badminton tournament and summer carnival
The 2026 Hengqin-Macao Cup Badminton Open Tournament will take place on August 9 at the Macao East Asian Games Dome. The mixed-team event includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles, plus mixed doubles, and is jointly organized with Hengqin authorities to promote cross-border sports exchange.
“The overwhelming response to registration reflects the public’s active enthusiasm for sports and, more importantly, the passion of our younger generation for athletics,” said ID acting president Lei Si Leng.
The Vibrant Community – 2026 Summer Sports Carnival, originally scheduled for July 4 and 5 but postponed due to bad weather, has been rescheduled for August 29 and 30 at the Olympic Sports Center’s Hockey Field.
The event features team competitions and a dedicated parent-child experience segment. “We have added a non-competitive parent-child experience to help bridge the gap between parents and children, making sports a positive channel for companionship and communication,” Lei added.
Community outreach, music competitions, and exhibitions
The “More Culture, More Happiness” campaign will bring music performances, workshops, and reading activities to World Heritage sites, parks, and leisure areas across Macau and Taipa throughout August.
The 44th Macao Young Musicians Competition continues through the month, with the Special Prize Competition scheduled for August. To mark the 450th anniversary of the Macao Diocese, church guided tours and “World Heritage Doctor” internships will also continue.
A self-guided “World Heritage Walk” educational kit for schoolchildren will be launched to encourage greater understanding of Macau’s World Heritage sites, while a sharing session will be held for interns who participated in the “Hong Kong and Macau Youth Palace Museum Internship Program 2026,” Leong said.
On the exhibition front, two new shows open in August: “Floating Brilliance – Green Shadow: Qing Dynasty Guangdong Painting Exhibition” and the “Macao Artists Association 70th Anniversary Invitational Exhibition.” Several other exhibitions remain on view throughout the month.
Mass sports, health programs reach communities
The ID will roll out community sports activities across August, including outdoor fitness events, sports experience classes, Tai Chi sessions, pickleball, sailing, rock climbing, and inclusive basketball. Regular “Sports Health Consultation Station” and “Mass Recreational Sports Day” events will also be held.
“The ID continues to bring sports resources directly to our citizens, ensuring that physical activity is no longer confined to specific venues but becomes an integral part of daily life,” Lei said.
Since June, the “Health Station” initiative – jointly run by the IC, ID, and Health Bureau (SSM) – has been extended to businesses and schools, bringing health services directly to workplaces and campuses.
WTT Champions return in September with star-studded lineup
The “WTT Champions Macao 2026 presented by Galaxy Entertainment Group” returns from September 8 to 13 at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, featuring the world’s top-ranked male and female table tennis players. Tickets go on sale today, with discounts for students, seniors aged 65 and above, and residents holding a disability assessment registration certificate.
Film service center to begin trial operations
The IC’s newly established Macau Film and Television Industry Service Center will begin trial operations in mid-August, conducting case-matching tests, resource coordination, and industry matchmaking events.
Leong said the center aims to “strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the city’s film and television talent and their counterparts in the mainland,” and offer consultation and referral services to help young professionals better connect with mainland opportunities.
Heat safety reminder for outdoor activities
With temperatures soaring, Lei also urged the public to take precautions when exercising outdoors. “Remember to hydrate regularly before, during, and after exercise, and adjust the intensity according to your personal fitness level,” she advised, adding that citizens should maintain good personal hygiene and healthy routines when using public sports facilities. “We hope that through this series of sports activities, we can accompany our citizens in spending a healthy and fulfilling summer.”
