June sees sharp rise in flu and enterovirus cases

The Health Bureau (SSM) reported a total of 1,616 cases of notifiable diseases in June. Among these, enterovirus infections showed a significant monthly increase, with 153 cases recorded – approximately 2.8 times higher than the previous month.
However, this represents an 86.2% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Influenza cases also rose sharply, with 1,262 reports in June.
This figure represents a monthly increase of about 2.1 times and a 30.5% rise year-on-year. Meanwhile, salmonella infections totaled 22 cases, marking a 22.2% increase from the previous month and a 37.5% increase compared to June last year.
Earlier this month, SSM data shows influenza activity in the city has surged past the alert threshold.
The bureau said that weekly positive detection rate of influenza virus cases has exceeded 13.1%, prompting officials to call on residents to take preventive measures.
Hospital monitoring shows a steady increase in flu-like illness consultations since mid-May, with a pronounced rise among children.
This year’s summer surge is mainly driven by influenza B (54.8%) and influenza A (H3) (38.1%), differing from previous winter peaks dominated by influenza A (H1), according to SSM. LV
