The Health Bureau (SSM) launched the 2025/2026 internship program on Sept.1 involving 446 interns across 14 healthcare professional categories.
This year’s program includes a wide range of professionals, such as physicians, dentists, traditional Chinese medicine doctors, pharmacists, traditional Chinese medicine pharmacists, nurses, clinical analysis technicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, dietitians, and pharmacy assistants.
There has been a notable increase in participation, with 446 interns this year compared to 390 last year. About 90% are placed at the Conde de S. Januário Hospital.
However, the 2023 internship program had slightly more participants, with 449 interns.
The director of SSM, Alvis Lo, recently led a “Reception of New Health Professional Interns” session, where interns shared their expectations and engaged in an interactive exchange.
Lo noted that, according to Law No. 18/2020 (Qualification and Registration Regime for the Practice of Health Professionals), all professionals must complete a clinical internship lasting between 26 and 52 weeks at recognized establishments.
