The Health Bureau (SSM) has announced a significant reduction in the waiting time for first appointments at the oncology department of the Conde de São Januário Hospital Center, cutting the wait time by 50% to just 1.3 weeks.
In a response to questions from lawmaker Zheng Anting, SSM director Alvis Lo outlined recent improvements.
The number of outpatient oncology clinics has risen from four to six since April, along with new psychology consultation rooms. A resource center served over 5,500 cancer patients and families this year through education and support programs.
Cancer was the cause of nearly a third of Macau’s deaths in 2021, according to official data, and the number of new cases and deaths has been increasing year over year. To address the issue, the SSM pledged to “continue training specialist doctors, including in oncology,” with the goal of improving early screening and treatment by 2030.
Zheng had raised concerns over heavy patient volumes straining medical staff. He urged expanding resources, such as recruiting more oncology specialists and improving facilities and equipment.
SSM assured that efforts are underway, stating that their aim is to intensify screening for major cancers to promote early diagnosis and treatment. Victoria Chan
