Sun Yingsha, Wang Chuqin crowned at WTT Champions Macao

The WTT Champions Macao 2025 Presented by Galaxy Entertainment Group concluded yesterday after six days of competition, with China’s Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin winning the women’s and men’s singles titles, respectively.

The tournament featured several notable results, including comeback performances, surprise breakthroughs, and two finals that highlighted the current balance of power in world table tennis.

Women’s Singles

In the semifinals, Wang Manyu advanced after a six-game victory over Chen Xingtong.

The match lasted over an hour and saw momentum shift several times before Wang secured the win. Sun Yingsha, the world No. 1, defeated Kuai Man in the other semifinal. Kuai, who was competing in her first WTT Champions semifinal, managed to take one game but was ultimately overpowered in four straight sets.

The women’s final brought Sun and Wang together for the second time in three weeks. Both players had already met in major finals earlier this year, with Sun winning the ITTF World Championships Finals and the WTT Grand Smash Sweden.

Wang, the 2023 WTT Champions Macao winner, was seeking her first singles title of 2025.

The match extended to seven games, with both players trading momentum throughout. Wang leveled the contest several times, but Sun closed the deciding game with consistent attacking play to secure a 4–3 win (11-8, 13-15, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6). The victory gave Sun her third WTT Champions Macao title after previous successes in 2022 and 2024.

Men’s Singles

The men’s semifinals featured Wang Chuqin against Jang Woojin of South Korea. Jang, who reached the final four of a Champions event for the first time, was unable to match Wang’s pace and precision. Wang won in straight games to advance. In the other semifinal, Brazil’s Hugo Calderano defeated Denmark’s Anders Lind, who had earlier eliminated Lin Shidong in one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. Calderano’s 4–0 victory set up a rematch with Wang.

The final paired the reigning world champion with the reigning World Cup champion. Earlier in the year, Calderano had defeated Wang in Macau to become the first player from the Americas to win the ITTF Men’s World Cup. This time, however, Wang controlled the match from the outset. Limiting Calderano’s opportunities to attack, Wang won in four straight games (11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4).

The result secured Wang’s third WTT Champions Macao title, following wins in 2022 and 2023, and ensured his return to the world No. 1 ranking. Calderano, while falling short in the final, qualified for the season-ending WTT Finals in Hong Kong.

Tournament Highlights

Beyond the champions, the event produced several storylines. Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz became the first player from the Americas to reach the quarterfinals of a WTT Champions event. Denmark’s Lind earned attention with his victory over defending champion Lin Shidong, while Jang marked his 30th birthday week by advancing to the semifinals.

The WTT Champions Macao 2025 combined established champions with emerging contenders, offering six days of competition that reinforced the global depth of table tennis. Attention now shifts to Beijing, where the China Smash 2025 will be held later this month.
