Average daily visitor numbers at Taipa Municipal Market have climbed to about 7,500 since the launch of its revamped food and cultural creative zone, representing a 4.6-fold increase compared with pre-upgrade levels, according to municipal officials.
Representatives from the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) revealed the data during the recent Islands District Community Consultative Council meeting, adding that a total of 19 food and cultural creative stalls, along with one café and tea stall, are currently in operation, with overall performance described as smooth since opening.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, council vice-convener Leong Chun Kit said the Taipa Market project, which officially opened in December last year, has been well received by both residents and tourists.
He suggested better use of vacant stalls across the city in a bid to integrate dining and cultural creative elements and attract younger participants.
He also proposed making use of existing mechanisms to introduce temporary spaces for cultural retail and experiential workshops, and recommended considering Coloane Market as a pilot site for revitalization. Such initiatives, he said, could combine community services with cultural tourism while offering low-barrier entrepreneurship opportunities.
The Taipa Market food and cultural creative zone has been operating for nearly three weeks, with strong foot traffic observed during weekends and public holidays.
In addition to rooftop outdoor dining areas, new exterior signage has been installed to enhance the market’s visual identity.
