12 convicted in hiring bribery case

The Court of First Instance has handed down convictions to 12 individuals involved in a bribery scheme linked to job recruitment at a major casino operator.

All defendants were tried in absentia and received suspended prison sentences ranging from three months to one year and nine months, reflecting their clean criminal records.

The case involves a supervisor from the Food and Beverage Department of a major casino operator, identified as Galaxy Entertainment Group, according to media reports.

The supervisor, together with his girlfriend and another staff member, allegedly accepted bribes from job applicants, promising to bypass standard recruitment procedures, such as interviews, in exchange for payment.

Nine other defendants were convicted of offering bribes to secure employment positions. Payments, typically around MOP1,000 per candidate, were processed through bank accounts in mainland China.

The court ruled that the actions violated Macau’s Prevention and Repression of Corruption in the Private Sector Law, which criminalizes both offering and receiving advantages in employment matters. LV
