Students from the University of Macau have tested the level of formaldehyde, a toxic chemical commonly found in construction materials and furniture, in two rooms of the UM Pearl Jubilee College and discovered that it has exceeded the set safety level. The level of formaldehyde in some drawers is 15 times higher than the safety level, according to the test results. A student has told TDM that she and her roommate seemed to lose more hair after moving into the UM Colleges. Some of her friends in the university have also experienced symptoms such as skin rashes and allergic rhinitis. A medical staff member from the Conde de São Januário Central Hospital, who would like to remain anonymous, has told the Times that they have seen many students from UM who went to the hospital to treat the above mentioned symptoms since the beginning of September.
MSAR athletes win seven medals at Incheon
The curtains have been drawn on the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea as of Saturday. Macau athletes pocketed seven medals, including three silver and four bronze, in Wushu, Karate and Taekwondo. This put the MSAR in 29th place in the medal count.
This year’s Asian Games was concluded with karate fights. Lou Wai Kit from Macau was unable to enter the final in the men’s +84 kilograms after facing previous Asian Games bronze medalist, Khalid Khalidov from Kazakhstan. Lou’s teammate Cheung I Ching was also defeated by Benish from Pakistan in the women’s -50 kilograms, and did not proceed to the next stage. All the Macau athletes left South Korea for home yesterday. China ranked first in the medal count this year, winning a total of 342 medals. South Korea ranked second with 234 medals. The next Asian Games will be hosted by Jakarta, Indonesia in 2018.
