IAS reports 9% drug positivity rate in pilot tests

The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has reported that approximately 9% of samples collected in the second phase of its emerging drug detection pilot program tested positive for drugs, with around 14% of those involving new substances such as etomidate (commonly known as “space oil”), mephedrone, and synthetic cannabinoids.
The program ran from July to December 2024 and tested 1,600 samples.
Despite the emergence of new drugs, traditional narcotics remain the primary substances abused, said the chief of the bureau’s Addiction and Rehabilitation Department, Cheang Io Tat.
The IAS said it will continue with a third round of testing this year to assess the post-legislation abuse risk of new drugs.
In collaboration with private clinics, the IAS has carried out 2,600 health checkups between 2018 and 2024 to uncover hidden drug abuse cases, leading to 178 referrals. For youth-related cases, online outreach efforts have identified 51 individuals at risk, with successful contact established with four so far.
To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse, over 130 anti-drug events will be held from June to August. For the first time, a Greater Bay Area anti-drug science exhibition is being held at the Macao Science Center until Sept. 3. LV
