From the start of the election campaign up until Monday, the Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission (CAEAL) received a total of 17 complaints of alleged electoral illegalities, the president of CAEAL, Tong Hiu Fong, said during a visit of CAEAL members to the mock polling station at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion.
According to Tong, and after a preliminary analysis, nine of the 17 cases are suspected of having some form of illegality and hence were forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
Two were referred to the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC), five to the Public Security Police Force (PSP), and the last two to the Judiciary Police (PJ), for further investigation.
Among the causes of the complaints were the illegal posting of campaign materials and incidents in which campaign activities were disrupted.
Additionally, a complaint was received about a person suspected of offering money in exchange for votes. The case has been referred to the CCAC.
The city’s parliamentary election will take place this Sunday, September 12. RM
