A major flood control project is set to begin on Coloane’s western coast, with the first phase focusing on marine works to minimize disruption to nearby residents and businesses, according to local community leaders and government representatives.
The project, detailed on Coloane’s official website, includes the construction of a 1,200-meter flood prevention embankment, four flood gates, and a hydrological observation station. The initial phase, scheduled to begin in late March or early April, will focus on clearing seabed silt, said Yeong Keng Hoi, a representative of the Son I Welfare Association.
“The project is expected to start at the end of March or April. The SAR government has assured that since the first phase will take place entirely at sea, it will not impact coastal residents or the surrounding environment,” Yeong stated in a TDM report.
Meanwhile, the Macau Institute of Engineers has proposed enhancements to coastal support facilities during the construction period. Eddie Wu, the institute’s president, suggested that the government consider utilizing existing structures to improve public accessibility and amenities.
“The facilities along the shore and waterside are temporary. When the water level is low, they can be safely used by the public. The government should explore options such as opening up temporary parking spaces or even reconsidering the positioning of the pier while constructing the embankment,” Wu said.
The initial phase of the project is expected to be completed within three years. Victoria Chan
