Art exhibition opens ‘a new chapter’ in Sino-Portuguese cultural exchange

The exhibition “I Am Here: Helena Almeida – Presence and Resonance” opened recently at the Macao Museum of Art, marking a new chapter in Sino-Portuguese cultural exchange, using art as a bridge.

According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the exhibition serves not only as a major retrospective but also as a diplomatic gesture to strengthen ties between China and Portugal through cultural dialogue.

Almeida is recognized internationally as a key figure who has consistently used her own body as a medium to challenge the boundaries of painting, photography, and performance art since the 1960s.

Her iconic blue brushstrokes have become a classic symbol of contemporary art, and her practice is noted for its connection with feminist discourse, paving the way for more personal and subjective narratives in contemporary art.

The exhibition is structured in two parts. The first, “Presence,” offers a systematic overview of Almeida’s career, featuring approximately 190 original works across 42 sets.

The second section, “Resonance,” curated around the theme “Body, Object, Reflection,”presents works by six contemporary female artists from Mainland China and Macau, creating a cross-temporal and cultural dialogue with Almeida’s artistic vision.

The exhibition runs until April 26 on the first floor of the Macao Museum of Art. Ricaela Diputado
