Illegal cigarettes seized from two convenience stores in ZAPE

The Health Bureau (SSM) has launched an investigation after receiving a tip-off about two convenience stores in ZAPE allegedly selling illegal tobacco products.
Authorities found large quantities of cigarettes in both shops with packaging that violated Macau’s tobacco control laws.
One store was found with 159 packs (3,180 cigarettes), while the other held 492 packs (9,840 cigarettes).
The packaging lacked the health warnings required by Law No. 5/2011, which regulates tobacco sales and advertising in Macau.
The stores also failed to present import documentation for the seized items. As a result, the Customs confiscated the cigarettes, and the SSM has initiated legal proceedings.
If confirmed, the businesses may face fines of up to MOP200,000. The illegal products will be destroyed in accordance with the law.
The SSM warned retailers against testing legal boundaries, stating that any violations would result in serious consequences.
Authorities urged the public to report any suspected illegal tobacco sales to help maintain compliance and ensure community well-being. LV
