Jaywalking near airport raises safety concerns for driving tests

A member of the Islands District Community Services Consultative Council has recommended installing warning signs and deploying police officers along Avenida do Aeroporto in Taipa, as jaywalkers are frequently seen crossing the street, posing potential risks to learner drivers.

The councilor also suggested using smart devices such as infrared-sensing alarms to deter illegal crossings.

Despite railings along the side of the road and a pedestrian footbridge nearby, pedestrians continue to cross the street and trample over flower beds to reach the opposite side near the University of Science and Technology (MUST).

A local resident told TDM that he has witnessed pedestrians crossing while driving through the area and expressed concern about potential accidents. “This road is also part of a driving test route,” he said.

Another resident noted that vehicles travel at high speeds in this area, making it very dangerous for pedestrians to cross illegally. He also warned that pedestrians suddenly darting onto the road could disrupt driving tests.

Data from the Public Security Police (PSP) shows that Macau saw 14,638 traffic accidents in 2025, marking a 5.6% decline from 15,510 cases in 2024.

This translates to an average of 40 accidents per day, down from 42 daily incidents the previous year.

The most frequent cause was failing to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, accounting for 3,087 accidents. Speeding or loss of speed control followed with 2,024 cases, while careless steering was linked to 1,892 accidents. RD
