MGM lion dance championship to showcase 21 troupes

The “11th International Lion Dance Championship 2024 – MGM Cup” will feature 21 lion dance troupes, comprising 210 athletes competing in four categories.

The categories include: “Freestyle Lion Dance Championship – Taolu Movements on Poles,” “Female Traditional Lion Dance Championship,” “Youth Traditional Lion Dance Championship,” and “Junior Traditional Lion Dance Championship.”

This year sees nearly a 20% increase in participating troupes from regions including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Italy, and Myanmar. The event will take place at Barra Square of A-Ma Temple during National Day Golden Week.

MGM has also organized the Junior Lion Dance Summer Class for the past decade, promoting lion dance among youth. This year, in collaboration with Mak Chi Leong Dragon & Lion Dance Association, enrollment has tripled, allowing 100 children to participate and learn lion dance, bringing the total trained to 640 over 10 years.
